Why travel from Los Angeles, California to Iowa City, Iowa? After all, 4,500 miles is almost far enough to go coast to coast and then back again! Well, it's a mix of symbolism and practicality.

Los Angeles: Since the vehicle is being manufactured in Carlsbad, California, and the proxy that we're purchasing through lives in California (to meet the requirements of Aptera's initial region restrictions), there's a practical element. However, there's a symbolic element as well. California has long been ground zero for electric vehicles in this country, including the ill-fated EV1 that took Kris Trexler on his historic "Charge Across America". Furthermore, we'll be starting our journey at the Petersen Automotive Museum where Kris's EV1, one of the few that escaped the crusher, resides.

As a further tribute to this revolutionary car, our route includes Mesa, Arizona, to visit (as close as possible) the area where the overwheming majority of them met their fates.
Iowa City: As this is where we live, the practicality element is obvious. Two other possible destinations were considered: A) the east coast via DC, and B) Detroit, Michigan. The first route is tempting, but we would not have been the first. Several have pulled off this feat before us. Furthermore, the longer "crow-flies" length would have meant less time to charge into the challenges of the desert southwest and the Rockies. Detroit, where Kris went, has the symbolism of being the heart of the auto industry, but unlike the EV1, the Aptera is not a child of Detroit. Ultimately, there's just something nice about your destination being home.
